Spanish Lady

    G                            Em          C       Em       C                D

As I came down thru Dublin city, at the hour of twelve in the night,

  G                                    Em                C             Em      C        D

Who should I spy but the Spanish lady, washing her feet by candle light,

G                               D                            G                         D

First she washed them then she dried them, over a fire of angry coals,

      G              Em                    C         Em     C       D

In all my life I never did see, a maid so neat about the sole.

G                                                   C                      Em     C        D

Whack for me too ra loo ra laddie, whack for me too ra loo ra lay.

G                                                     C                   Em      C         D

Whack for me too ra loo ra laddie, whack for me too ra loo ra lay.

As I came back thru Dublin city, at the hour of half past eight ,

Who should I spy but the Spanish lady, brushing her hair in the broad daylight,

First she brushed it then she tossed it, on her lap was a silver comb,

In all my life I never did see, a maid so fair since I did roam.

Chorus

As I came back thru Dublin city, as the sun began to set,

Who should I spy but the Spanish lady, catching a moth in a golden net.

When she saw me then she fled me, lifting her petticoat over her knee,

In all my life I never did see, a maid so fair as the Spanish lady.

Chorus

I’ve wandered north, I’ve wandered south, thru stormy paths and Patrick’s Close.

Up and around by the Gloucester Diamond and back by Napper Tandy’s house.

Old age has laid her hand on me, cold as a fire of ashy coals,

But, where is the lovely Spanish lady neat and fine about the sole?

Chorus

Chorus.

Notes: The tune is originally an Irish one, 'Mo Ghile Mhear', also known as the White Cockade, but the words are anonymous. A ballad by the name of Spanish Lady was registered in England on December 14, 1624 with the 'Stationers' Company' from what I can gather.  Also the Clancy Bros say that their 'Galway City' is an Irish version directly based on Spanish Lady.

'Spanish Lady' is also an euphamism for 'prostitute',
